We really should be incredibly grateful to the new James Bond team.
Gone are the smarmy, cheesy lines of the old Bond films, the time-consuming (plus Snooze and Snort worthy) introductions of stupid impossible gadgets that WILL look stupid to future generations, the constant copulating and the shameless underwear plugs and the promotion of unprotected sex in every frame.
The new Bond is grittier, more stoic, more HUMAN, and more honest than all the previous Bonds. It's like a new, advanced toy really. He punches! He cries! He gets wounded! Now NEW! With extremely life-like reactions! Now in a theater near YOU!
So he's not more good-looking than Brosnan or Connery(?!), but he is more earnest.
In Quantum of Solace, a devastated Bond is on a mission to get to avenge Vesper's(the love of his life) death, and while doing so, gather more information about this secret organisation no one knows nuts about. He may be emotionally detached, but he's not emotionless. Craig's pain is there for everyone to see. For you die hard gadget freaks out there though, the equipment is totally 21st century, although Bond still prefers fists to invisible cars.
I don't really fancy the new Bond girl, who is also on a personal quest. She just lacks the intelligence(I'm not saying she's stupid!) and toughness of Vesper. Not a bad attempt, but she's not gonna get my vote for role model.
As I mentioned before, most of the less likable bits of old Bond is weeded out in this new installment, but I guess the producers got overenthusiastic about the purge, cause this film loses some of its Bondy film as the traditional bits are also removed. For example, the immortal line is uttered not once in the film, and there are less quips from our favourite agent.
You can tell 007 had aquaintances with other fictional agents. An early foot chase over rooftops in Italy mirrors the one in Bourne Ultimatum. Thank God they fixed that soon enough. But I really can't help feeling its not a Bond film as much as it is another action flick. Sure, it sticks to the James Bond formula. Intro, then opening credits(which was rather well done), then the main course... But its not quite so charming.
Plot's also weaker than Casino Royale.
Still, it's worth your two hours, and a respectable new addition to the Bond family. Go watch.
Note for Amanda: Bond looks better than he did in Casino Royale. His body finally looks in proportion to his head.
