Message to nerds: THIS IS WAR.
Anyone who has read today's Sunday times might have noticed a tiny little column before the comics section written by a proud nerd. The sentence is an oxymoron in and of itself. Proud nerd.
And the particular nerd starts her column by stating the difference between nerds and geeks. Fine by me, I would have done the same. It's terrible when ignorant shit heads label geeks as nerds. However, she made one fatal error when she defined geeks as, and I quote, " someone who is obsessed about a really uncool hobby such as, for instance, assembling plastic model robots and painting details on them with toothpicks." Woah, hold up there.
If she was mentioning those Gundam fanboys who have half a brain, I'll give her that. Unfortuantely she used the term "geeks". Which would include the whole she bang. Let me get this straight book worm. Gundam and anime freaks are NOT geeks, they are known as posers with bad taste. Write that down.Ironically, her column was about ignorance. So let me illuminate your deprived, ignorant soul with the light of geekdom.
GEEKS have different classes. We have the bottom dwellers, which would be where I am, the people who feed on the scraps of Geek-fo thrown down to us. We write articles and discuss about whatever we are PASSIONATE ON. You have middle class, which would be your wannabe model makers, people who assemble Y-Wings from scrap parts, and anyone who relies on Geekdom for a living. The provide information to international geeks. And to top it all off you have the creme de la creme of geeks, your comic makers like Stan lee, Your Movie lords Like Quentin Tarantino and J.J Abrams, and in the IT department Steve Jobs. This food chain applies to the categories of geek.
Namely, IT freaks(who I don't really communicate with), The comic bookers, the movie dudes. The last two are symbiotic really.
And we are not the "socially inept" people as described in your article, as many of us geeks are able to hold a civilised conversation. Refer to Adam Savage of the Mythbusters, half of the team that shed some light on your puny mind, and allowed you to sleep peacefully knowing your feet are safer with steel toed boots and other myths spread by the very same books you read. That man DESERVES respect, and no matter if he is a model maker, because his works are pure art.
Strangely enough, in her article she mentioned she was left out of a conversation with her friends because she wasn't well informed of American idol. WHO'S socially aloof now? See, that'll rarely happen to geeks because they make it a point to be well informed in as many things as possible. That's a rule to being a good geek. Robert Rodriguez happens to take pride in his role of a cook and a filmmaker, Adam Savage puts in as much time in mythbusting as he does making sculptures, and I read the freaking newspapers everyday so I can get in touch with the world I loathe so much. We've read an extensive amount of your snotty classic books because many of them would have been realised on screen anyway. Heck, and we unlike YOU, actually read the books so we can defend whatever we like about it so they'll get it right in the movie. We read and do stuff because We respect their makers and the spirit they carry, and not because we feel inadequate because we not heard of most of the entries in some unknown expert's list. Who cares?!
Ignorance is something I CANNOT and WILL NOT tolerate, and I try desperately not to fall into the deep dank hole of stupidity. It's something MOST respectable geeks cannot stand actually, so the next time you carelessly use the geek, you might want to revise your opinion for IGNORANCE.
EUARGH! What the fuck kind of reading list is that?! Ew! Seriously girl, get a life.
