Well that was miserable.

Just watched The Mist, and went to a whole 'nother level in cynicism.
Understandably, this movie isn't on anyone's feel good list (If it is, see a psychiatrist), movies adapted from Stephen King's books rarely are. That guy, I don't know. His books never really bothered me as much as they did most people. His monsters and what have you rarely haunt me as much as trailers for B grade asian horror films. So I never quite got the whole deal about my friends owing sleepless nights to him.
Until I finally got that the scary parts aren't so much the demons and ghould in his stories, but rather the human citizens themselves. Yes. All you normal beings are the hanuting diseased boogeymen that give King his horror status.
Don't believe me? The Shining was about the Overlook hotel sure, but face it, we're more terrified of the Cabin fevered caretaker than the freaky twins. Carrie's main shriek winner was well, Carrie, who became like that because of how her peers treated her. The Mist was creepy not because you have crazed giant bugs that look like rip offs of Starship troopers, but because of the sheer amount of stupidity of people trapped in the grocery store. It's scary because the human behaviors are believable, and you know if you were ever put in that situation, you are capable of doing (Or maybe you have done) the heinous acts. I'd like to believe no one could be that stupid but we've certainly seen how mobs are formed and what they can do.
Hey it's happening now. Otherwise we wouldn't have newspapers. It's hard to have faith in the good of humanity after a few bad experiences. Heck, one bad experience is enough to leave you bitter and infuse paranoia.
I guess the Mist is so terribly depressing because it has no happy ending, which is what we've come to expect of movies, it's horrible to see humanity depicted like those weak minded individuals, and because it's so true. Man it's everything I hate about humans lumped into a two hour flick.
It doesn't pay to be civil towards idoits really.
