Guess odd numbered Star Trek movies are no longer shit.
Just caught the new installment yesterday, after mistakenly realising we were not able to watch Wolverine in time for the student prices. What they shifted the cut off to 5 now?! Have they ever been a student?! It's impossible to get off school by 6 let alone 5! I was informed of the change by some female Vogon (those ugly monster/aliens in Hitchhiker's guide) who simply replied "NO! After 5 no more!" Sheesh. Near;y wanted to put a nice dent in her nose. If I could find it.
Yuqi was a bit tiffed at the change in plans, for he wasn't mentally prepared to watch JJ Abrams's flick. I suppose you might argue since the prices are jacked up anyway you might as well have stuck to the plan of watching Wolverine. But hell if I'm paying 10 bucks... See this is the problem with last minute decisions! I never get my mind right! It's just pure chaos! Strangely enough it always seems to happen a lot when I'm with Braceface(Oh you haven't you heard?).
I kind of swore I'd never turn Trekkie/Trekker, having already given my allegiance to Star wars(Can we have a name? Star wars fans doesn't ring!). And Damn it I'll still stick to that, even though this movie definitely snagged my attention and kicked off a fascination with the Trekkers' beloved universe. I'm still reluctant to watch any of the older Star Trek series and movies, but since this new universe of which I AM a fan of is somewhat linked, I have been doing my research. Get off my back. I know what Tribbles are now. The problem is, the new timeline doesn't have a series or a 40 year history. So I guess I'll have to patiently wait for furthur news.
The movie was simple enough for non fans, even simpler for non sci fi fans. It also contained enough jargon and references to the original series to placate the die hards. And with Nimoy back as original Spock, they really have no reason to rebel. With special effects to rival the Star wars prequels (well Lucasfilm chipped in, so I guess Star Wars fans won't feel guilty), and action sequences formed with Steven Spielberg's help (another Lucas link), it's breath taking, thrilling and suspenseful enough. Having said all that, most of you might be going "another summer popcorn flick then". But the main characters' relationships are well written, and Kirk and Spock are both given back stories for non-fans to better understand them. So yeah, there's emotional depth. Quinto is brilliant as conflicted half-human half-Vulcan Spock, and manages to capture the struggle within. Pine's Kirk is still cocky, arrogant and Playboy, but he's real enough to be likable, having the charm that was given to Shatner and Harrison Ford. Karl Urban's cranky and exasperated medic McCoy is gruffily(?) funny, and Yelchin's 17 year old genius Chekov is this ball of youthful energy and naivety, eager and innocent. didn't see enough of Sulu to form an opinion, but I like him by default cause he's Asian. And fences. Simon Pegg's Scotty did manage to ellicit a few chuckles from the audience, but he was introduced rather late into the movie, and I think people who are completely new to the Star Trek universe are gonna know who he is.
Oh well. Maybe in the sequel. From what I gather the cast signed on for two more. And we all know Trekkers never really let anything Star trek die off quickly. Especially since it's been resurrected. And it's bloody good.
Although I didn't feel entirely satisfied. The movie was brilliant, but I don't know. Something's lacking. Still, I'm gonna urge you all to watch it. Yes even non sci fi fans. There's enough Eye candy on board to keep you happy. Trust me.
